¿EL fin de la lectura en papel?

Hace algo más de un año, cuando le preguntaron a Steve Jobs (emprendedor y visionario cofundador de Aple y Pixar) respecto a qué opinaba del lector digital de libros Kindle, dijo: “No importa cuan bueno o malo sea el producto, lo cierto es que la gente ya no lee, el 40% de los norteamericanos leen un libro o menos por año” augurando un mal futuro a dicho producto de Amazon.
Al parecer, en aquella ocasión, se equivocó no solo en cuanto al ratio de lectura sino también en cuanto al éxito de Kindle. Respecto a la lectura, pareciera [solo pareciera ... que a lo mejor ni eso] que si es cierto que cada vez se lea menos libros en papel, sinembargo esto no significa que el nivel de lectura haya disminuido. Lo que sucede es que la forma en que leemos ha cambiado, actualmente se tiene demasiada información al alcance de nuestra vista y existen nuevos medios para acceder a esta información en diferentes formatos (ordenadores, dispositivos móviles, e-books, etc), con lo cual se sigue leyendo mucho, pero a lo mejor la “calidad” de la lectura no sea la misma que antes (el nivel de involucración o concentración en la lectura ha caido, a menudo sólo leemos verticalmente sin profundizar).
En cuanto al éxito de Kindle, de momento les va muy bien, según nos enteramos en Gurusblog. El pasado 10 de Junio fue el lanzamiento del Kindle DX, con capacidad para almacenar 3.500 libros sin ilustraciones, una pantalla más grande que el modelo anterior, orientada a poder leer más cómodamente no sólo libros sino también periódicos y una autonomía de 4 días si está conectada la Wifi [aún no se vende es España]. Y desde que Amazon lanzó el Kindle en el 2007, ya ha vendido más de 500 mil unidades -un negocio de alrededor de 200 millones de dólares. Asimismo, la venta de los libros electrónicos de Amazon se ha disparado [el negocio está en la venta de libros electrónicos -contenidos- más que el aparato en sí mismo]. Amazon no revelará las cifras, pero los editores dicen que las ventas de los libros electrónicos, a pesar de ser aún un pequeño negocio, se cuadriplicaron en el 2008.
Entonces, lo que si es cierto es que la lectura de libros en papel está disminuyendo en favor de nuevos formatos, nuevos medios como los digitales. Pero no sucede únicamente con los libros, sino con todo tipo de publicaciones en papel. El mundo editorial impreso, dependiente de la publicidad, lucha contra compañías como Google y Yahoo que venden publicidad vía cualquier artefacto con conexión a Internet. Y sabemos como acabará esa lucha.
Además existen muchos otros aparatos similares al Kindle de Amazon, que usan “tinta” electrónica vertida en una pantalla nítida para brindar una experiencia que se aproxima a la lectura en papel -sin el costo del papel, la impresión ni la distribución. Y al menos media docena de compañías, que incluyen a gigantes como Hewlett-Packard y Fujitsu, desarrollan una nueva cosecha de lectores electrónicos, algunos de los cuales comenzarán a llegar al mercado este año. Diseñados con los requerimientos de los periódicos y revistas , estos lectores ofrecerán pantallas más grandes (para facilitar la navegación a través de los artículos),Wifi , mejor resolución y luego hasta video [me pregunto qué diferenciará a estos dispositivos de un ordenador normal?].
Dado que trabajo hace varios años en una compañía dedicada al negocio editorial (casi el 70% de nuestros ingresos provienen del formato en papel) hemos “tocado” este tema de la caída del papel en varias ocasiones. El mercado de productos en papel está en la curva descendente de su ciclo de vida [un ciclo bastante extenso desde la invención de la imprenta] y seguramente en 10 años la forma de lectura de directorios clasificados, periódicos, revistas y libros será muy distinta a la actual [por lo tanto deben aparecer nuevos modelos de negocio - sobrevivirán las empresas con capacidad de adaptarse a estos nuevos modelos]; aunque seguramente siempre quedará una menor proporción de publicaciones en papel. Es difícil que desaparezca del todo.
“El fin de la lectura sobre papel asusta, porque para muchos leer no es solo conocer, sino que leer es sentir, pensar, imaginar, creer” , particularmente prefiero la lectura en papel [a no ser que sea para viajes largos para evitar el sobrepeso] me resultaría difil acotumbrarme al formato electrónico, además me gusta ir a comprar los libros a la libreria y perder el tiempo revisando las tapas de otras publicaciones y claro tener una bonita “biblioteca” en casa donde ir coleccionando los libros (colección que de momento está muuuuy pobre).

En primer lugar, te felicito por esta reflexión. Yo la he tenido muchas veces, y se ha repetido recientemente, cuando me interesé por adquirir Kindle para mi mujer, ávida lectora de libros.
Soy ingeniero de telecomunicación, por lo que mi comentario quizá hará pensar a más de uno que “en casa del herrero cuchillo de palo” pero allà va.
Es verdad que como ingeniero me fascina la tecnología, pero en cuestión de libros creo que debemos ser más humanistas y no cabe duda de que el tacto, edición, encuadernación, e incluso el hecho de que un libro hoy sea físicamente igual que hace 300 años es una conjunto de factores que hacen la experiencia de leer más “humana”. Con ello no quiero decir que la tecnología deshumanice. Creo que un libro es más una cuestión emocional que puramente racional. El hombre no sólo es animal racional sino racional-emocional. Y la emocion tiene un peso, yo creo que superior.
Por ejemplo. tengo sobre mi mesa una edición de “La historia interminable” de Michael Ende, de la editorial Alfaguara, año 2002. Aparte de la calidad del libro en sí, esta edición tiene la particularidad de estar impresa a dos tintas: sepia y verde hoja, y añadir una serie de ilustraciones también coloreadas de esta manera. Se lo regalé a mi sobrina hace algunos años, y adquirí otro ejemplar para mi hijo de 11 años. Sin duda este diseño se puede emular con un libro electrónico, pero el hecho de tocar este libro y ver estas tintas tiene un efecto relajante y que te predispone a la lectura de esta historia fantástica de forma muy distinta que con un lector de e-book.
El peso del libro: todos queremos ir cómodos, naturalmente, y en este sentido el lector de e-book es fantástico pero, ¿y la sensación de leer un libro que te gusta y que es largo y pesa?. ¿No has sentido leyendo un libro largo que te gusta el alivio de que “aún queda mucha parte por leer (muchos ratos para disfrutarlo)?. Esta sensación no es posible con un e-book, pues el peso y grosor siempre es el mismo, se pierden sensaciones (emociones).
¿Y qué decir de las encuadernaciones?. Yo no colecciono libros, excepto en un caso: las historias de Julio Verne. Tengo una traducción de “20000 leguas de viaje submarino” de la editorial Anaya que pertenece a una colección destinada a un público más bien juvenil, pero que es la mejor traducción que he leido sobre esta obra; de hecho esta edición aporta como valor añadido las notas al pié de página. Sobre la obra en sí, Verne ha estado considerado un autor más bien “para niños”, no entraré en esto, que daría mucho de sí; además en una buena traducción se aprecia muy bien el estilo decimonónico, excesivamente descriptivo y hoy pesado para el lector medio de las novelas “de aventuras”. Es la evocación, la fantasía lo que apreio hoy de estos objetos-libro, como valor de colección. Pues bien la encuadernación de este libro es quizá la más inadecuada para mi gusto, precisamente por su orientación al público juvenil. Por tanto tengo otra edición que imita la encuadernación en rústica, y que es la que he puesto en mi salón. En este caso la traducción no es tan buena, pero me gusta tener el libro como objeto de colección, una encuadernación clásica en la que se estampa el título en letras doradas tiene el poder de evocación que ninguna pantalla de lector electrónico puede proporcionar, al menos por ahora.
Por tanto el libro como objeto global proporciona muchas más experiencia y evocaciones (o una experiencia global más gratificante) que un lector electrónico. Es precisamente por esto que creo que el libro en papel todavía no puede ser completemente sustituído, ya que para el lector creo que en mayor o menor medida, la clave no es el objeto, sino la experiencia del objeto. En el caso de Kindle (o cualquier otro similar), tecnológica y prácticamente hablando, es mucho más ventajoso que un libro, pero la experiencia que proporciona para mi es infinitamente más pobre…

. La tecnología lo que debe hacer es ayudarnos a simplificar algunas tareas, hacernos más cómodas las cosas , pero no reemplazar esta experiencia. Además hasta que estas tecnologías se asienten, deben resolver muchos problemas… ahora último se ha montado todo un lío respecto al control que puede tener el distribuidor (en este caso Amazon) sobre los libros que tiene el usuario y cuales está leyendo (esto a raiz de que Amazón retiró -sin avisar- ciertos títulos del Kindle que los usuarios ya habian descargado y pagado). http://www.error500.net/articulo/kindle-como-tecnologia-control
Concuerdo contigo totalmente, como dices la lectura de un libro (en formato tradicional – papel) es una “experiencia” , no solo consiste en ingerir la información allí contenida sino que involucra más cosas … menos mal
